Athens-Clarke police Chief Joseph Lumpkin and Ed Benson of the Rotary Club recently delivered copies of “A Student’s Dictionary” to pupils at J.J. Harris Elementary School. Chief Lumpkin also spoke with students about the “Hands Are Not for Hitting” program. A Student’s Dictionary program provides a book to every third-grader in the Clarke County School District. Each student is expected to write their name in their books as well as their expected graduation year to reinforce the importance of getting a high school diploma. Hands Are Not for Hitting is a program designed to allow for family discussions to emphasize that it is not acceptable to act violently.
When Mary Shavonne (Shae) Wilson-Gregg started working at the Athens YMCA as a teen, she didn’t know she was embarking on what would become a life-long career.
The Georgia Traffic Injury Prevention Institute (GTIPI) at the University of Georgia will bring P.R.I.D.E. (Parents Reducing Injuries and Driver Error) to the Athens area on Thursday at the Athens Career Academy to help Clarke County parents prepare their 14-, 15- and 16-year-olds to drive.
